Therapy Approach

I specialise in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), but I also use interventions from other evidence-based therapies to inform my practice. I find that, by integrating a number of approaches, this allows me to personalise therapy and adapt to the changing needs of clients.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and CBT for psychosis (CBTp)

CBT helps people understand how their thoughts, feelings, behaviours and physical sensations are linked. It identifies and challenges unhelpful thinking patterns and can be used to treat a variety of problems. Although CBT primarily focuses on the 'here and now'; core beliefs developed in childhood can be explored overtime.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a structured, skills-based therapy for clients looking to improve their ability to stay in the present moment, have positive relationships with others (whilst effectively communicating their needs, boundaries, and managing conflict), develop emotional regulation and coping skills, and effectively manage distress. DBT aims to support clients to build a life worth living.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT encourages the acceptance of thoughts and emotions, rather than trying to change them. It is a compassionate, evidence-based approach that can support clients to identify and live more aligned to their values through taking meaningful action.

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)

CFT aims to reduce enduring feelings of shame and self-criticism, which may have arisen from early abuse or neglect, by promoting compassion for the self and others. This approach can increase self-acceptance and a sense of safety. CFT also supports clients to build awareness of the mind-body connection, and provides exercises to tune into this.

Systemic Practice with Families

I do not deliver family therapy. Instead, I use The Family Model to consider how clients may be impacted by their family context, whilst also considering how their individual problems may be affecting other family members. Using interventions informed by Systemic therapy and Family Group Conferencing, I aim to increase understanding of family strengths and needs, and connect adults with a network of support.

Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET)

MET is client-centered, goal-oriented approach designed to strengthen motivation for change. By exploring and resolving ambivalence, MET helps individuals build commitment to positive changes, particularly in addressing substance use, alcohol misuse, and other behavioural challenges.
